The anatomical skin has 3 layers
  • Epidermis: It provides a waterproof barrier
  • Dermis: It contains connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands
  • Hypodermis: Adipose tissue

Skin is the largest organ contributing about 16% of an individual's weight differing in its thickness from place to place (on the body) and person to person.

  • The colour of the skin is created by the cells called melanocytes by producing the pigment called melanin, depending on the amount of pigment produced by these cells the tone of the skin is obtained.
  • Skin is the layer protecting from the entry of microbes, changes in temperature by minimizing loss of water, protecting the internal organs.
  • Skin is an organ of sensation, the feeling of touch, hot, cold.

Skin problems


  • Rash: skin irritation, allergic reaction.
  • Dermatitis: inflammation of the skin.
  • Eczema: Inflammation along with itchy rashes.
  • Psoriasis: it is an autoimmune condition with typical complaint of scaly, silvery plaques on the skin with or without discharge.
  • Dandruff: It is caused by seborrhea dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema
  • Acne: Acne mostly occurs at young age due to hormonal changes. It is common and occurs in about 85% population and it can be severe in a few.
  • Cellulitis: The inflammation in the dermal layer.
  • Skin abscess: It appears like boil or furuncle.
  • Ringworm infestation: It’s a fungal infection characterized by ring like manifestation on the skin.
